Before we start you tuning your Violin will need a good Tuner, your Violin.duh!, A little bit of patience and last but most important a quiet space to tune!
From experience it is very hard to tune in a noisy space. Your little tuner will go crazy and start picking up all the noise around you. To save yourself time and the head ache, make sure the space you are tuning in is free from extra talking, television noise, music and anything else that could slow down the tuning process.
I know this doesn’t seem like something that you normally hear as a step in tuning, but trust me it will help loads!
Pegs Vs. Fine Tuners
There are two ways two Tune your violin, using either the Pegs, or your Fine Tuners. Dmg canvas 2 4 1 – create custom disk images.

I use the Pegs if my Violin is really out of tune and I use the Fine tuners if my violin is just a little out of tune, or needs a little extra “fine tuning”. (Did you see what I did just there.) ?
Now for the good stuff…How to Tune!
Step 1:
You can tune your violin one of two ways… With your violin in your lap with your Violin facing you OR with your violin in playing position, Like so…

Once you have your in either playing position or in your lap you are ready to tune.
Step 2:
Starting with the A String (you can honestly start with any string you want but for now just start with the A string.) Pluck or Play the note with your bow until it registers on your digital tuner.
Starting with the A String (you can honestly start with any string you want but for now just start with the A string.) Pluck or Play the note with your bow until it registers on your digital tuner.
On your tuner you will need to pay attention to two different things.
1. the Note/Letter in the top left hand corner of your tuner.
2. the tuning line in the middle that moves.
Note: This will tell you which direction your fine tuner needs to go, or in other words if your string is too high (Sharp #) or too Low (Flat b)
Note: This will tell you which direction your fine tuner needs to go, or in other words if your string is too high (Sharp #) or too Low (Flat b)
Step 3:
Now depending on which way your tuner line is moving and what the note name/letter in the corner says you will now need to move your fine tuner or peg to tune your Violin.
Lets say for example that the tuner is reading as A# and the tuner line is waaaaayy far to the right. You will need to loosen the fine tuner or peg to make the note more Flat to correct the tuning of the note. So I would turn my fine tuner to the Left and my peg down or also to the left. (Righty Tighty, Lefty loosey…it applies to the bow as well as Tuning the pegs/fine tuners!)
A Trick I always tell my students is to “Turn the Fine Tuner (or peg) the direction you want to tuner line to go so it lines up perfect in the middle”.

And Thats it! It’s really that simple!
Another tuning Tip:
If you are going on to play in an orchestra, the Conductor or your teacher in Music class, will always have you tune from an A note first. Everyone will hear the note and then have to tune all their other strings from that A note. I always recommend my students start tuning their A string first, but be in the habit of practicing this. While you are playing at home by yourself you can tune whichever string you want first. ?
